The Configuration Change Console offers real-time change detection and integration capabilities as described below.
The Configuration Change Console is a policy-based system designed to help organizations and administrators support their IT compliance goals and help deliver the level of service expected by their users. The console includes a set of predefined frameworks created by industry experts to meet common compliance requirements. This enables IT departments to quickly and easily demonstrate compliance with government regulations and industry standards such as SOX, PCI, and ITIL.
The frameworks provide predefined controls mapped to application, device, and user event detection rules. These mappings empower the enterprise to monitor adherence for best practices from a centralized dashboard and provide concrete evidence in the form of reports for internal and external audits, reducing both the risk and cost of compliance. The console also provides an easy-to-use interface enabling administrators to define their own specific frameworks, policies, and controls and map them to the devices across their environment that they decide to monitor.
The Configuration Change Console automates the detection and capture of user and application actions that result in changes to the infrastructure without requesting or requiring user input. This automates the compliance audit trail and minimizes the time required to uncover compliance breaches.
Examples of components monitored for configuration change include:
Files and directories
Processes
User accounts
Server resources
Databases
Middeware
Network devices
The Configuration Change Console complements many existing IT infrastructure and service management systems through the following integration approaches:
Change management system integration — The Configuration Change Console integrates with popular change management systems (such as Remedy) to create a closed-loop change management solution. Integration is achieved through an adapter that enables communication between the change management system and Configuration Change Console. This integration enables the Configuration Change Console to determine if a change was authorized or unauthorized through an open request for change in the change management system.
Simple Network Management Protocol traps — The Configuration Change Console can send an alert whenever a specific change is detected to any third-party system.
Standards-based APIs — The Configuration Change Console is based on industry standards such as Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE), and Extensible Markup Language (XML), and can integrate with similar standards-based interfaces.
Configuration Change Console Restricted-use LIcensing
The Configuration Change Console Server includes restricted-use licenses for Oracle Database (Enterprise Edition), Oracle BEA WebLogic, and Oracle Business Intelligence, solely for the purpose of running the Configuration Change Console Release Server.

The Provisioning and Patch Automation Pack automates deployment of software, applications, and patches. It provides easy and scalable critical data center operations, resulting in lower operational risk and cost of ownership.
This pack provides functionality for "bare-metal" provisioning of operating systems and software images, (such as Oracle Clusterware, Real Application Clusters, Automatic Storage Management, and Oracle Application Servers), cloning of existing installations and Oracle databases, and patching.
Enterprise Manager versions 10g 10.2.0.2 and later enable you to also orchestrate the provisioning and patching process through Deployment Procedures. These are a set of "best practices" shipped out-of-box that you can also extend by customizing according to your needs. You can reuse the deployment procedures, and you can export and import them across environments that would involve creation of a single procedure to do operations across test environments and production. The Deployment Procedures are also hot-pluggable, and enable you to add procedures as Oracle releases them to My Oracle Support.
Note:
In Enterprise Manager 10g 10.1, three features that are currently licensed as part of the Oracle Provisioning and Patch Automation Pack were previously part of the Configuration Management Pack: Patch Deployment (Patch Database and View Patch Cache, Patch staging), Clone Oracle Home, and Clone Database. If you have previously licensed the Oracle Configuration Management Pack for Database, you are entitled to use these features without licensing the Oracle Provisioning and Patch Automation Pack. The following sections describe the features that are included as part of the Provisioning and Patch Automation pack for Oracle Enterprise Manager.
The following features were previously part of the Configuration Management Pack in Enterprise Manager version 10g 10.1, and are now part of the Provisioning and Patch Automation pack.
Table 6-4 Former Configuration Management Pack Features in Provisioning and Patch Automation Pack
Feature | Description |
---|---|
Critical Patch Facility |
Grid Control performs an assessment of vulnerabilities by examining your enterprise configuration to determine which Oracle homes have not applied one or more software patches that have been identified as critical. Grid Control provides a list of critical patch advisories and the Oracle homes to which the critical patches should be applied. The Critical Patch Facility enables administrators to download the Critical Patch metadata from My Oracle Support (formerly MetaLink) and upload it to the repository. The "RefreshFromMetalink" job can then use this metadata to perform Critical Patch calculations in offline mode. Administrators will be alerted to security updates even if the Management Service is not connected to My Oracle Support. The Critical Patch Facility's offline mode makes it easy to keep your environment patched to the latest level. Only the Critical Patch Facility advisors remain in the Configuration Management Pack. |
Database Cloning |
You can clone a database instance using the Clone Database feature of Grid Control. Clone Database clones a database instance to an existing Oracle home. To create a new Oracle home into which to clone the instance, use the Clone Oracle Home tool to create a new Oracle home, then use the Clone Database tool to clone the instance to that cloned home. |
ORACLE_HOME Cloning |
Use this feature to clone existing Oracle home directories. After you have configured an Oracle home into a desirable state — where you have chosen particular installation options, applied required patches, and tested it — you can clone this Oracle home to one or more hosts using Grid Control's "Clone Oracle Home" tool. |
ORACLE_HOME and Target Patching |
Use this feature to patch an ORACLE_HOME. |
The Provisioning and Patch Automation pack and Configuration Management packs share the following features.
